Survey of commuters’ response to traveler information

Survey of commuters’ response to traveler information

I'd like to conduct a survey to collect commuters’ general opinion regarding freeway information and control field elements. The survey will cover, in particular, commuter awareness, preferred channels, and perceptions of usefulness, information clarity, and accuracy.

(1) Changeable Message Signs (CMS, fixed or portable) - These display travel times and/or incident information

(2) 511 System - Traveler information

(3) Ramp Metering

--The scope of the survey could (and probably should) be narrowed down to just one of these three elements.--

I'd like these surveys to provide a basic assessment of the benefits and effectiveness of various ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) information and control field elements from commuters’ perspective, and also to compare and contrast the benefits of those field elements to commuters.

*An operation assessment of current practice and gaps has already been completed.

*A review of best practices and literature should be complete in the next week or so.

*The results of this survey will be part of a model and final report that will be created by CCIT staff the project moves along.

We have data from a previous survey with a very similar objective that we could analyze (both the survey and the results).

This project is new, so it doesn't have a web page description yet, but this link will take you to the CCIT current project site, where you can get an idea of what going on.

Please let me know if you are interested in working on this. Also, please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks!

Virginia,

I might be interested in working on this project. Is this project still something that you are pursuing? Do you have any other team members? Can you tell me a little bit more about this project and what you hope to accomplish by the end of the semester? Thanks!

I am working with 2 other staff engineers at CCIT on the project. Caltrans is the ultimate sponsor/client of the project, so the goal is to meet their needs, but the project is very flexible at this point. We can basically do what ever we want to show the "effectiveness" to commuters. This could be time savings, peace of mind, or whatever measure seems appropriate.

Have you used 511 yet? Their website is 511.org and you can call 511 on your phone to get travel info either before your trip or en-route. This is one aspect that could be studied.

Have you noticed travel time signs on the side of the freeway? What/how/where the information is displayed is one aspect that could be looked into, and another is how these sign affect behavior. Any other ideas?

The other "field element" is ramp metering. ie. When you are about to get on the freeway and you see that the ramp meter is on - how does that make you feel? Does it change your behavior? Will you stay on the main road instead of getting on the freeway? Will you call 511 to see if there are any delays?

We could dive into any one of these areas or cover them all at a higher level. It just depends on the expertise of the group, that is if I can get a group together.

I think that a survey and focus group would be great for this project. I'm not sure about the third method cover in class could be...
